5 tips to let your freelance business skyrocket

As the article about the three predictions for the freelance market mentioned earlier, is the amount of freelancers growing exponentially. The freelance market is skyrocketing, but it is not always easy to take the right steps towards independent success. With competition all over the place, it’s important to stand out in the expertise in which you thrive!

To provide an excellent service and the customers will come, doesn’t work for everyone: that’s why The Maffia has developed 5 tips that will make your freelance business booming. Are you ready to make your business steady? Then read on!

1.      Clarify your business goals

Because being a freelancer is being your own boss, it is important to define clear business goals. What or who do you want to reach with your company as a freelancer? What are your short and long term goals? And not to forget: How will your work-life balance look like?

Defining a clear goal and answering the question “why” is the first important step you need to take to get your business moving in the right direction. It is therefore important to know how you see the future of your company, but equally important to know what your daily activities will be. Setting daily targets will keep you and your company in check, whilst it also increases your productivity!

On the other hand, we cannot beat around the bush: to set such goals is a long-term task and not always easy. Fortunately, the freelance market is very advanced at the end of 2019, and you don’t have to do all the administrative fuss by yourself. Free and easy-to-use management and time tracking tools are ready to assist you in tackling your daily challenges. And we have even better news: The Maffia has already listed great tools for you to help you out! Be sure to check it out and lean back as these tools take over a certain part of your work!

2.      Market yourself

After your business goals are set, it is important to know who you’re going to target in the market. Think about who needs your product or service and why. Set up a marketing strategy by doing research on your market psyche: What attracts them? Why is your product or service relevant? By comparing your business with similar companies, you can start to list your unique selling propositions!

Furthermore, you also have to decide which channels you want to use to reach your target audience. The best way to start is to create a website and your own social media accounts. And don’t forget: your social media and website is your showcase, so be as creative and attractive as possible so that your customer only wants more!

Finally, you have to interact well with your customers. By answering the questions of your customers and prospects with a personal touch, you can build up a strong customer database. Get close to them and see your database grow.

3.      Start networking

As mentioned before, being active on social media and your website is one of the best ways to network with potential customers. However, it is at least as important to let people know that you are there on the market by showing your face.

tip to skyrockt your freelance business: network
Our trainee taking the stage @Creative Mornings

In Belgium, there are several events that you can attend to network physically. Making contacts in real life, talking about your business or your objectives are often postponed as a waste of time. But who knows, you might come across your dream partner who can boost your business in a variety of ways. Nothing to lose, everything to gain ?.

The Maffia has already been participating in at least one event a month and has been reaping the benefits of networking. BAM’s marketing congress and Creative Mornings were already on our agenda. At creative mornings, we also had the opportunity to take the stage and explain our businessmodel. New clients who were interested in our story is what we got back!

4.      Never go for the sale right away

Another problem freelancers may have is that they want to get their service or product too directly to the customer. A good relationship with your customer and a mutual understanding of each other’s needs is the most important part of the deal.

Even if your customer doesn’t respond, it doesn’t mean you have to bury them with new questions and messages. The fact that a customer does respond to your message/offer shows a certain interest, and it is precisely those people that you need to seal the deal with.

5.      Keep your costs under control

And lastly, it is important to keep your costs under control. When you start a business as a freelancer, one of the first things you need to know is what your earning potential will be.

The best way to track your finances is to split your finances into three parts: personal, business and emergency funds. The third part may sound extreme or unnecessary, but you should know that freelancing does not guarantee a steady paycheck like a 9 to 5 job. There will be times when business is slow and you can fall back on this, but let’s hope this won’t happen with our tips & tricks ?.

Finally, it is important to split your finances into personal and business expenses, as this will make your tax deductions much easier to follow. Again, there are several tools to help you organize your finances. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to check them out! Knowledge to the people!
